Sapelo
Sapelo is an island off the Georgia Coast. It has a storied history, first inhabited by Native Americans prior to 500 BCE, occupied by Spanish missionaries from about 1575 to 1685. English colonization began about 1733, then it was held successively by private owners, the last of whom was R. J. Reynolds. His widow sold the land to the state of Georgia, the final agreement reached in 1976. It is now a national estuarine reserve with the oversight of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. More about its history can be obtained from http://www.sapelonerr.org/historymaps.htm
A group of us has some spent some weekends on Sapelo beginning in 2003, staying in the Reynolds Mansion. The photos below were taken over that time and concentrate principally on the environment (shore line, vegetation, birds) but includes some from inside the mansion.
