Photos were taken at Persepolis, Iran, in 1975. Cyrus the Great selected Persepolis as the home of the Persian Empire about 550BCE. It was conquered during the rein of Darius III by Alexander the Great (who later married Darius's daughter) in 330BCE. The remains in the pictures are from structures built during the reign of Darius I, the Great, dating from about 315BCE. Clicking on the thumbnails below will produce a larger picture.
