Mayan Ruins:
Dzibanche and Kohunlich
The photos (click on them for enlargements) below were taken in March, 2009, while we were on a cruise in the Caribbean. These sites are two of a number of such sites located in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. They are both within a two-hour drive of Costa Maya, Mexico, a southern city on the east coast of the Peninsula.
Dzibanche is fairly old dating to 200 BC. It became a great city around 200 AD, and many of the structures now seen were built in the Late Classic period, roughly 600-900 AD. There are also pictures of surrounding trees and closeups of tree bark and some of the restoration that is going on. More can be read about Dzibanche at http://www.pbase.com/devonshire/dzibanche and at http://www.geocities.com/atlantis01mx/yuc_pen_south/dzibanche.htm.
Kohunlich was settled prior to 200 BC, and its structures were built in the Early Classic period, roughly 250-600 AD. The structures with the masks were built prior to 500 AD. Included, as above, are pictures of surrounding vegetation with closeups of tree bark and some restoration.
